AI Technology Buyer’s Guide for Restaurants

AI is quickly becoming part of the restaurant technology stack.

For operators, the question is no longer whether AI is interesting. The real question is which AI tools can solve operational problems now.

Restaurants are using AI to answer phones, capture reservations, support guests, forecast demand, reduce repetitive work, improve marketing, manage inventory, and create better visibility across locations.

But not every AI tool creates the same value.

This buyer’s guide is designed to help restaurant owners, operators, and multi-location teams understand where AI fits, what questions to ask vendors, and how to choose tools that support real business outcomes.
‍

What This Guide Covers

Use this guide to evaluate AI technology across key restaurant use cases, including:

AI phone answering
AI restaurant reservations
Guest messaging and chatbots
Marketing and loyalty tools
Inventory and demand forecasting
Operations and analytics
Multi-location reporting
Implementation and ROI

The goal is simple: help restaurant teams invest in AI that improves efficiency, supports staff, and creates a better guest experience.
‍

Why Restaurants Are Investing in AI

Restaurants are facing pressure from rising costs, staffing challenges, changing guest expectations, and increasing competition.

The National Restaurant Association’s 2026 State of the Restaurant Industry report notes that operators are looking to automation, AI, digital ordering, and data analytics to improve productivity and strengthen the guest experience.

Slang’s own AI in the Restaurant Industry study found that nearly 94% of operators believe AI will be necessary to stay competitive, and 71.6% plan to adopt AI in the next two years.

That does not mean restaurants should adopt AI everywhere at once.

It means operators should focus on the areas where AI can solve clear, measurable problems.
‍

Types of AI Tools for Restaurants

AI Phone Answering

Restaurant phone calls are still tied to high-intent guest behavior.

Guests call to make reservations, ask about hours, check availability, modify bookings, ask about private dining, or get answers they cannot easily find online.

AI phone answering helps restaurants answer calls automatically, handle common questions, reduce missed calls, route complex requests, and give staff more time to focus on in-person guests.

Slang’s State of the Restaurant Phone Report shows why this matters: restaurant calls are often tied to revenue-driving actions like reservations, ordering, private dining, and catering.

AI Restaurant Reservations

For reservation-driven restaurants, AI can help turn phone demand into completed bookings.

AI restaurant reservations can support reservation calls, answer availability questions, reduce after-hours booking friction, and connect guest intent to supported reservation systems.

This is especially useful when staff are busy, the restaurant is closed, or multiple guests call at the same time.

AI Operations and Analytics

AI can also help operators better understand what is happening across the business.

AI restaurant operations may include call analytics, guest intent reporting, demand trends, location-level performance, staff interruptions, and operational dashboards.

For multi-location teams, this visibility matters. Operators need to know which locations are missing calls, when demand spikes, what guests ask most often, and where operational friction is showing up.

AI Marketing, Loyalty, and Guest Communication

AI marketing tools can help restaurants segment guests, personalize offers, create campaigns, respond to reviews, and improve loyalty engagement.

These tools are most valuable when they are connected to real guest behavior, such as visits, orders, reservations, preferences, and location-level activity.

AI Inventory and Forecasting

AI inventory and forecasting tools can help restaurants plan for demand, reduce waste, avoid stockouts, and improve ordering decisions.

These tools are especially useful for operators managing multiple locations, seasonal demand, or complex purchasing patterns.
‍

How to Evaluate AI Restaurant Technology

Before choosing an AI tool, start with the operational problem.

Ask:

What problem are we trying to solve?
How much time, revenue, or efficiency are we losing today?
Which teams are affected?
Which systems does the tool need to integrate with?
How will we measure success?
What does implementation require?
What support will the vendor provide?

The best AI tools are not always the ones with the most features.

They are the ones that fit your workflow, integrate with your systems, and create measurable business value.
‍

Questions to Ask AI Vendors

When evaluating vendors, ask practical questions:

What restaurant-specific workflows does your platform support?
What does the AI handle without staff involvement?
When does the system route to a human?
What integrations are available today?
What reporting is included?
How is performance measured?
How long does implementation take?
What support is included after launch?
How does pricing change with usage or location count?
Can the platform support multiple locations?

For enterprise restaurant groups evaluating voice technology, a structured restaurant Voice AI RFP framework can help compare vendors more consistently.
‍

What Restaurants Should Measure

AI should be evaluated based on outcomes, not hype.

Depending on the tool, restaurants may measure:

Table 1
Goal	Metrics to Track
Capture more demand	Answer rate, missed calls, reservations booked, after-hours calls
Improve efficiency	Staff time saved, calls handled, interruptions reduced
Improve guest experience	Response speed, call resolution, guest satisfaction
Improve operations	Location-level reporting, call intent, escalation trends-level reporting, call intent, escalation trends
Improve marketing	Campaign engagement, repeat visits, loyalty activity
Reduce waste	Forecast accuracy, inventory variance, stockouts, waste reduction

Made with HTML Tables

The right metrics depend on the use case.

For example, an AI phone answering tool should be judged by calls answered, missed calls reduced, reservations captured, guest satisfaction, and staff interruptions avoided.
‍

Implementation Tips

A strong rollout is just as important as the tool itself.

To get more value from AI:

Start with one focused use case.
Define success before launch.
Make sure integrations are clear.
Train staff on what the AI handles.
Explain when calls or requests route to employees.
Monitor performance after launch.
Use early results to refine workflows.

AI should make the restaurant easier to run. If implementation creates confusion or adds manual work, the tool will be harder to adopt.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the most useful AI tools for restaurants?

The most useful AI tools solve clear operational problems. Common categories include AI phone answering, AI reservations, guest messaging, marketing automation, inventory management, demand forecasting, and operations analytics.

Can AI help restaurants increase reservations?

Yes. AI can help answer reservation calls, support after-hours booking demand, reduce missed calls, and connect guests to supported reservation workflows.

Will AI replace restaurant employees?

AI works best when it supports employees rather than replacing them. It can handle repetitive tasks so staff can focus on hospitality, service recovery, and in-person guest experiences.

How should restaurants measure AI ROI?

Restaurants should measure ROI based on the use case. Common metrics include missed calls reduced, reservations captured, staff time saved, revenue recovered, guest satisfaction, and operating efficiency.
‍

Choose AI That Solves a Real Restaurant Problem

AI can help restaurants operate more efficiently, capture more demand, and deliver better guest experiences.

But the right investment depends on the problem you need to solve.

A single-location restaurant may need help answering calls during service. A reservation-heavy concept may need better after-hours booking coverage. A restaurant group may need consistency and reporting across every location.

The best AI tools fit your operation, support your team, integrate with your systems, and produce measurable value.
